While my friend and I were leaving our hike, we stumbled upon an iPhone in the middle of the road.
Again, I had a moment where I had to decide am I going to pick this iPhone up and try to find its owner or am I going to ignore that it's there and keep it moving (or do I make the world a better place my running over this iPhone so he/she can get a droid! jk jk sort of.)
I chose to pick up the iPhone! Partly because I know I'd want someone to do the same for me if I'd lost my fine (which happens quite frequently).
This begin a wild hunt to find the owner. Well, it wasn't really wild but I want you to keep reading! :)
We couldn't unlock the phone, but he had recently received some messages from an unsaved number! Our first thought was to call the number and have that person call the owner of the phone! Problem solved! GENUIS! ...... except we had the phone....
We also saw someone had just followed him on instagram and we could see their username!
We had so many questions..... like the number isn't saved, so obviously this person doesn't know the owner of the phone that well...
- do we call him anyways...
- do we take it to a police station?
- do we try and follow this random person on instagram hope they are able to get in contact with the owner?
- do we just toss the phone back into the middle of the street and hope he comes back for it...
Well, we were determined to help, so we persisted!
We decided to give the number that had just texted him a call and just see what happens! The guy surprisingly answered! He didn't have much information about the guy other than the fact that his name was Mike and that he thought he worked at a place called Mr. Tire. But wasn't sure which location but thought it was the one in Chapel Hill! 😩😩
At this point we were like what the heck, we're in this deep, I guess we're going to Mr. Tire. So we went to Mr. Tire and said hey i think we have the phone of someone named mike who might work at this location but also might not???
Thankfully, Mike did work there (it was his 3rd time losing his phone that week so the guy at the front desk was not too surprised) and we were able to leave the phone there for Mike to get!
The guy at the front desk wasn't as excited about getting Mike's phone as we were that we found the right spot for it, so the reunion was a little anti-climatic, but it still felt good to help!
So much to unpack here!
- maybe don't save every number on your phone
- hang around people who are willing to go on a wild goose chase
- Most importantly - DO GOOD
I'm so glad we fought against our instinct that may have been saying this is an inconvenience and tried to do good! :)
I hope you will do the same! :)
Returning the iPhone to Mike!
