Tried to fit as many state parks in as I could during my long memorial day weekend!
Hit up Carolina Beach State Park, Lake Waccamaw State Park, Fort Fisher State Recreation Area, and Lumber River State Park (well - sort of)
My friend, Thao, and I started our trip camping at Carolina Beach State Park. Loved the Sugarloaf Trail. And while there's no beach access there was plenty of places to wade in the water or get your feet wet. The park also has ample opportunities to do water sports like Kayaking, Jet skis, and more!
My favorite park on this trip was definitely Fort Macon. I was expecting crazy crowds and crowded beaches since it was a holiday weekend but Fort Macon State Recreation offered pristine beach access minus all the crowds! I felt like a little kid again jumping into waves and swimming along the shore! Parking was relatively easy and FREE! Highly recommend for anyone ever looking for a low key beach spot to hang!
Next, we hit up Lake Waccamaw State Park. It features a 700 ft board walk and over 7 miles of trails! What was super neat about this lake was how shallow the water was even hundreds of feet from the shore! It would be the ideal spot to take some young kiddos to play and splash around in the water!
Last (and maybe least), we did (or rather tried to do) Lumber River State Park. The initial plan was to camp there, but that didn't happen. Upon walking towards our campsite, I felt like I was being eaten alive by Horseflies. I'd heard the horse flies were pretty bad, but I had no idea! I felt like every 30 seconds I was swatting at one!
(Picture of what it looked like I was doing the whole time! Ha!)
The park was well kept and I've heard that coming during a different season offers a totally different experience. The Princess Anne Trail is talked about a lot and kayaking down the still calm waters of the Lumber I bet is pretty awesome. But alas, the horseflies won the battle this time. NEXT TIME!
