Northwest Chatham Co. Adventures (Terrells & Snow Camp)

My hunt to see all of Chatham's unincorporated communities took me to Northwest Chatham next!

First stop on my NW Chatham County tour took me to the community of Terrells. Terrells was once site to one of the few schools in Chatham that educated Black students. Now, Terrells AME Zion Church was one of the few markers left of this community.

As I was coming into the community, I drove by the pastor of the church as she was putting up some signs! She invited me to come and speak to her church about my learnings (uh-oh). We'll see what happens there! I also found out there's a cemetery behind the church that has some grave sites of former slaves that dates back to the 1700s. Will definitely have to take another trip back there!

Secondly, my journey's found me in the community of Snow Camp! Snow Camp has a rich history dating back to the days of the revolutionary war! Apparently, Snow Camp got its name from some soldiers who camped there during a day it snowed (these soldiers probably would have failed a creative writing class.)

Of note about Snow Camp is that he was once heavily populated by Quakers. One of the quaker churches in the community was a part of the Underground Railroad despite the many risks and dangers being part of such a network posed.
